It was not easy to uncover information about the Lotus flower, which is not to be confused with the Water Lily. They are much photographed and filmed. Wikipedia proves, once again the source. There is much more information about them than I have provided.

Nelumbo nucifera

The Indian lotus (Nelumbo nucifera), often known as sacred lotus or just lotus, is one of two extant species of aquatic plant in the Nelumbonaceae family. It’s sometimes known as a water lily, though this term usually refers to members of the nymphaeaceae family.

Lotus plants have evolved to thrive in slow-moving river flood plains and delta environments. Every year, hundreds of thousands of seeds fall to the pond’s bottom from lotus stands. While some seeds grow right away and are devoured by wildlife, others can go dormant for a long time while the pond silts in and dries up. The dormant seeds rehydrate and start a new lotus colony when sediments containing these seeds are torn loose during flood conditions. ( Paraphrase d.)
