The context of verses 22-39:40 in the Quran is that they were revealed after the Muslims migrated from Mecca to Medina in 622 and the first time Muslims were permitted to take up arms to defend themselves. More importantly, these verses call on Muslims to defend Christian and Jewish places of worship indicating that Islam was not intended to be exclusivist but to ensure the right of diverse faith communities to peacefully coexist
