More than 40% of marriages involving children happen in India. And the number could be even higher if it were not for Kriti Bharti, an activist who devotes her  life to prevent such unions, rehabilitate and reintegrate children into society.

Arranged marriages are a tradition difficult to break in several parts of India. And the worst is that many families still give their daughter’s children to older men. Kriti Bharti says she has prevented more than 900 of these unions, in addition to legally annulled 19 that had already happened. She created a foundation for debate and fighting this difficult social issue, the Saarthi Trust.

Kriti has been threatened with death several times. The last was when she rescued a 17-year-old girl who ran away from home so as not to marry the groom chosen by her parents, a 21-year-old boy that she defined as “alcoholic”.

One of the stages of the work is to talk to the families so that they understand. Some succeed, others do not. “It’s great when the family agrees with the cancellation stands beside the girl, but when they do not, we call for justice,” says the activist.

The volunteer team Saarthi Trust works basically on two fronts. One is the Legal part to prevent marriages, and other, even more important is the rehabilitation so that  children can have a better future. According to Kriti, many of them are treated as outcasts after wedding cancellations.

The NGO also organizes discussions in villages, schools and other public places to discuss the harmful effects of child marriages. According to Kristi, “it is a tradition that needs to be abandoned. We need to show rural communities there are better ways to unite. It is our duty to change that. “
